- Name: Swiss Chard

- Height: 18 to 24 inches
- Soil Type: Almost Any, but likes a lot of humus
- PH Range: 6.0 – 7.5
- Preferences: Sun or Shade, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
I always plant Swiss Chard directly in the garden bed. Some gardeners pre-soak the seeds but I’ve never had any luck with that. I put them right into the garden about 1/2 inch deep and spaced 6 inches all around.
Swiss Chard requires a good bit of water. I start watering once a week in the Spring and Early Summer and switch to twice weekly as Summer really heats up.
Harvesting starts when the outer leaves are 6-9 inches tall. About 8 weeks from planting.
Start your harvest by only cutting those outer leaves and leaving the inner to grow some more. Harvesting is continuous until well after the first Fall frost.
My chard has over-wintered this year, so I expect to have a very early Spring harvest!
I like to saute Swiss Chard in Olive Oil, along with fresh chopped Garlic and almond slivers. Plate it hot and have at it!
